About Me

My name is Philip Powell. I am a photographer, son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a Retired Photoengraver from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. I became interested in photography after my brother returned home from the military during the Viet Nam War. He presented me with my first camera in 1969. It was a Yoshika 35mm with a fixed lens. After experimenting with this camera for many weeks, I was hooked! I dabbled in photography for a while after that. Then, in 1971 I got married and began my family. I was blessed with three beautiful daughters, who quickly became my subjects in many different settings. During this time, I experimented mostly with Kodachrome slides as well as color prints. I started my professional career in Industrial Arts (Printing). I began as a flyboy on a high-speed web printing press. I did this for two years while attending night classes at Printing Industry of Washington School. After I completed this program, I applied for and received a four-year apprenticeship in the pre-press department. This apprenticeship involved learning the camera, layout imposition and platemaking. It trained me to prepare everything before printing up to making metal plates. I spent forty-one years in the printing craft from developing film in the tray to imposition and layout of litho film on light tables. As technology changed from working on light tables to electronic imaging on computers and beginning to use photoshop in ‘95’, I quickly adapted and learned the new techniques. As you can see, I have always been around photography in one way or another. After retiring from the printing trade in 2011, I wanted to continue learning about photography. I joined the Maryland Professional Photography of America (MDPPA ) in 2010 and later earned my Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) certificate and became a Certified Professional Photographer of America through Professional Photographers of America (PPA) in 2017. I photographed my subjects using a Canon 5D Mark III, 5D Mark IV and EOS Mirrorless Professional Cameras. My goal with each photo shoot is for everyone to have fun and feel confident and good about themselves. I also want to capture the moments that leave people breathless. Whether it’s taking family portraits, high school senior portraits, business portraits, baby portraits or any other special occasions, I always strive to bring out the best in each of my subjects. I also enjoy and have experience in pet photography, Business and Environmental Portraits, Events and Landscape Portraits. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me. Please contact me for any of your future photography needs.
